Who loves corn mazes? How about sunflower mazes? I know i do! This story will be a journey that began May 2017 and will end October 2017. Updates will be added to this story on this page. (If you want to follow the development as it is posted, sign up for the updates)

The journey includes the seeding of the sunflower maze, the growth, and it will end with how to best preserve the soil after the fun of the maze is gone.

Off the Corrales main Rd. there is a Wells Fargo Bank. North of the bank, immediately after the bank, there is a small dirt road, which is visible in the image above. If you drive west on that road, you will see an empty field to the south with the Corrales park next to that field (also to the south).

On Friday, May 5, 2017 at 10:30a an amazing educational project will take place. About 150 children will gather to learn about how seeds become plants. Join us for a morning of learning fun!

INTERVIEW

Below is an interview that I recorded at the Gonzalez Heritage Farm on May 1, 2017 with Daniel Sandoval (as in Sandoval County). He is part of the Corrales Community Farms collective, which emphasizes the need for farmers to protect their water rights. This specific project will use ditch irrigation vs digging wells.

He also mentions that this maze, unlike other mazes, will be seeded in the shape of the maze itself. In other words, the field will not be planted and then bulldozed, or cut down to form the maze. The only seeds that will be planted, will be in the shape of the maze itself.

As you drive north on Corrales Rd. you will see the Corrales Valley Fire Dept. building on the east side of the street (on your right).

When you pass the bank and past the empty field next to the bank's drive thru, you will arrive at the light post. Turn left (if heading north).

The Corrales Elementary 4th and 5th grade classes plant the Sunflower Maze at the Gonzalez Heritage Farm

On Friday morning, May 5th, the ARCA staff walked to the Gonzalez farm bringing with them the seeds for the Sunflower Maze.

The day was amazing!

The children will return to the farm to see how their sunflowers are growing.
